The handle of the key to the gates of the city contains a symbol (salamander in flames), a slogan (the inscription "Durabo") and the crest of Toruń (an angel with the crest). Below is the inscription "Toruń". The bit of the key is in the shape of stylized city walls.

The President of Toruń can present somebody else with the key to the city gates, which is a sign of a symbolic transfer of authority. According to the tradition, every year in May, during the students’ Juwenalia celebration, the university students in Toruń are given with the key for three days.

A copy of the key may be an honorary souvenir for special guests of the city.
